Freshly squeezed orange juice that has been defrosted in the fridge can be kept for an additional 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator before using; freshly squeezed orange juice that was thawed in the microwave or in cold water should be used immediately. Instead, oranges should be peeled and sectioned and their seeds removed before freezing.

For best results, the oranges pieces can be covered in a sugar syrup, and then poured into an airtight container. Stored in this way, oranges can remain in the freezer for up to a year. Another option for storing oranges long term, is canning. Because oranges are so acidic, they store quite well, and can be canned with a simple water bath. Wash the oranges, and peel them, then separate the orange into sections. Remove any remaining pith and seeds from the sections, and pack them in sanitized jars, with an inch of space at the top.

Cover the orange sections with either water, syrup, fruit juice or any liquid of choice, leaving a half inch of space.

Each tree produces one crop of fruit per year, with the fruiting cycle taking up to 10 months for some varieties. Oranges have traditionally been harvested in winter, but new variety creation and cultivation techniques now allow for harvest almost all year.

Generally, early-season varieties are ready for harvest between October and January, mid-season between December and February and late-season between March and June. Orange trees fruit best when they receive the right amount of fertilizer. Producing fruit takes a lot of energy from the tree and only healthy trees are able to respond to this demand.

But too much fertilizer decreases cold hardiness and delays fruit maturity. Beginning in their second year, orange trees should receive 1 pound of fertilizer per year of age.

Apply a balanced, granular fertilizer such as or in the middle of March each year. The trees should never receive more than 12 pounds of fertilizer, regardless of their age. Two factors that sometimes affect orange tree fruit production are a lack of cross-pollination and alternate bearing fruit varieties.
