I've learned that they've got their means of sublight speeds through their Narvhal Class Bioships. Yet, the Hive Fleets' incredibly fast rate of advance into the galaxy belies the argument made by some that they do not possess a mode of faster-than-light travel.
Whilst it is true that the Tyranids are forced to remain at sublight speeds while within the gravitic boundaries of a planetary system, they are capable of superluminal velocities when travelling through interstellar space.
They probably aren't particularly fast, but there's a lot of them. Hive Fleets are far, far larger then any other fleet out there. From what I've read, the Navy does do alot of these sorts of hit and run attacks on hive fleets, but as has already been said, hive fleet are colossal in scale. There are likely simply too many drone ships to kill before the fleet arrives at any given planet.
I imagine with the sheer number of bio-ships, it would be easy to get cut off, surrounded and overwhelmed. If you're beating a retreat to avoid this, you aren't killing as many ships, and the hive fleet keeps advancing. Speak them not and every one of you shall die today. They don't travel through the Warp like the IoM does, but rather use the gravity attaction thingy the Narvhal does. Warp Travel is extremely fast, if a bit unreliable at times. Sometimes you can even come out before you left.
